What is leil? [leil]

[le:il] (Estonian, noun) “sauna steam”; the burst of heat and vapor created by ladling water onto hot stones, and therefore the sacred ritual of making it.

For centuries, the sauna has been a sacred place for the people of the North. In a rapidly changing and noisy world, it is increasingly important to take moments to truly be present and find peace. Leil is at the heart of this experience.

Leil is not just what fills the sauna room. It is what connects people, slows time, and turns heat into a shared ritual. It is the invisible element that makes sauna more than a place.

1. Ancient Beginnings

Leil has been with us since the very beginning.

As early as the 13th century, saunas were already part of life in Estonia. In the smoke saunas of our ancestors, it was more than heat — it was a ritual, a moment of cleansing, connection, and quiet reflection.

2. A Living Tradition

Through centuries, leil remained at the heart of Estonian life.

It brought families together, marked important moments, and carried traditions from one generation to the next.

3. Everyday Escape

Today, leil is still a pause from the outside world.

A chance to slow down, breathe deeper, and return to something simple, honest, and real.

4. Carried Forward

Leil continues to evolve with us.

From ancient smoke saunas to modern spaces, its essence stays the same: a shared experience of warmth, presence, and calm.
